Alpine Tech _ Innovation Sprint

Startups and Tourism players working together on specific digitalization challenges in Alpine tourism.

Data Control

Tourism service providers need to regain control over guest data and use it to connect with their customers. The goal is to develop prototypes for gathering data from various sources (ski passes, guest cards, location-based information, various service providers) and create specific output formats that can be used in marketing, sales, customer relationship management, booking forecasts and more.

Enhance Guest Experience

Tourism service providers and their experience offering need to stand out against competing destinations. The goal is to prototype enhancements to existing service offers or develop free-standing digital solutions for unique consumer experiences - using new technologies such as VR/AR, Voice, location-based services, crypto-currencies or gamification.

Customer Journey

Develop prototypes that support tourism service providers to improve their way of communication and interaction with guests. Hack into the whole customer journey to improve the way of communication before, during and after the guest’s stay. Using chatbots, voice, recommendation tools or digital assistants.

Sprint Challenges

Challenge 1: Swarovski Kristallwelten

D. Swarovski Tourism Services GmbH strives to turn crystal into a living experience at its three locations: Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds), Swarovski Kristallwelten Store Innsbruck, and Swarovski Kristallwelten Store Vienna. Those three unique destinations combine art with lifestyle and Austrian tradition with an internationally successful tourism model.

Problem with these service offers is that visitors of Swarovski Kristallwelten and shops barely share online recommendations after they had a good experience. This is far from ideal for Swarovski, as they do not get valuable feedback from their visitors and there is a lack of positive online recommendation triggering potential future customers. Therefore, the need of getting high-rated and authentic feedback from visitors – in real-time, possibly during the experience – is very relevant.

The goal is an ongoing and inward experience tracking for the three Swarovski locations in order to systematically record guests' needs and feedback. This experience tracking should be a natural and enjoyable part of the customer journey. As a result, Swarovski should be able to evaluate the feedback and as a consequence guest satisfaction and other strategic and communicative measures should improve.

Challenge 2: Tirol Werbung GmbH

Opening hours of various restaurants and hut providers in Tyrol vary heavily, depending on the season and on weather conditions. Information about opening hours is relevant for guests as well as for locals in order to plan excursions and hikes. The problem is, that there is no existing tool for hut and restaurant providers to transmit the current opening status in an easy and flexible way to different channels.

The goal is to create a digital solution that is easy to use for tourism providers to communicate their opening status. This information should be automatically transfered to the the existing Tyrolean geodata pool and be automatically transmitted to tourism associations and other sources of information, like Google, Tripadvisor.

Challenge 3: Tirol Werbung GmbH

Throughout the year, touristic events take place all over Tyrol. Those events are currently communicated on many different platforms. There is no centralized platform, where all events can be found and booked by customers. In addition it is time-costly and inefficient for event organizers to provide information to all existing platforms.

The goal is that guests and locals can access a central point where all events can be found and booked directly. Furthermore, it should be easy for the individual organizers to provide information to the central platform and to handle ticketing. Various additional benefits (loyalty programs, individual event proposals, profiling, gamification…) should also be offered in order to make the usage of the solution attractive and more probable.

Challenge 4: Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

The TVB Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis should be enabled to keep and re-gain data sovereignty regarding their visiting customers - which is also true for more than 600 tourist service providers within the destination. In order to make this possible and to carry out a professional data management, the data at all guest touchpoints (hotels, ski schools, sporting goods rental, ski tickets, etc.) should be automatically gathered and stored on a centralized platform. The data should be aggregated in sequence and prepared for specific further use.

The goal is an organically growing database, which allows easy integration of additional systems and which can be individually and dynamically adapted to the destination Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. (eg additional payment systems, bonus programs, just in time offers etc.)

The special challenge lies in the integration of the individual IT-systems and interfaces and the central data collection (DSGVO compliant).

Challenge 5: TVB Wilder Kaiser

The tourism region Wilder Kaiser in Tyrol, with its villages Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll, is especially known for its diverse sports, leisure and entertainment offers as well as for its excellent quality of life. The region, similar to many other destinations in Tyrol, has problems finding professional employees in the field of tourism. On the other hand, tourism in Tyrol is famous for its hospitality and authenticity - which only good employees can guarantee. Therefore the lack of educated and motivated employees is a big issue.

Wilder Kaiser started its employer branding project „Club of Excellent Employers“. Goal is to further grow the project within the Alpine Tech_ Innovation Sprint and to create an online solution which includes different aspects and applications, e.g. the possibility for employees to connect with peers, to book events, to profit from special offers in the area and to offer a loyalty program for employees in the region... There should also be the possibility to give feedback or to hand-in ideas to guarantee continuous development.

For further information about the project „Club of Excellent Employers“ visit: www.wilderkaiser.info/staff

Challenge 6: T-Mobile

T-Mobile is a nationwide mobile operator in Austria who is running its own telecommunication network. This not only applies to the traditional business, but also to new topics such as IoT and Big Data. For example, we provide Big Data Analytics based on highly aggregated and anonymized signaling data, which occurs in the telecommunication network. We develop algorithms for pattern recognition, which allow to provide mobility insights to the movement of people. We have a huge IoT partnering network with experience in platforms and end-to-end solutions.

Wattens, located in the heart of Tyrol, is a village of around 8.000 inhabitants. Wattens is known as home of Swarovski and other big companies. One of the main challenges Wattens faces is an increasing traffic situation in the center and on its incoming roads. This results in higher pollution and noise, which is negative for inhabitants.

The goal is to identify the main sources of the traffic problem in Wattens and suggest ways to use technology-based solutions to reduce any or all of them. T-Mobile Austria supports this track with a combination of IoT and Big Data.  IoT development modules as well as aggregated and anonymized signaling data of the Wattens area is provided for a period of 2 weeks.
